Henley Standard, September 15th, 1905

A meeting was held last night at the Oxford Temperance Hotel to consider the desirability of forming a Henley Anglers’ Club. Mr. G. W. Reeves presided over a small attendance and said that the meeting was the outcome of the impetus given to fishing by the visit of the International Anglers to Henley on September 4th.

A Working Men’s Club has been started on Monday last, but those in favour of starting a Henley Angling Club did not wish to run counter to the Working Men’s Club and would try to run side by side with it.

After further discussions it was decided that a club should be formed to be called the Henley Angling Society.

Henley Standard, September 8th, 1905

All sorts of conditions of men invaded Henley on Monday morning. They came by special train from Paddington to Henley to take part in the great angling competition promoted by the Silver Trout Angling Society, London, and open to the world. They marched out of Henley Station headed by the Henley Town Band playing The Marseillaise out of compliment to the French anglers in the large party — there were 259 anglers.
